Through external things, reflect inwardly.
MengYing Sun
A Chinese woman grow up in XinJiang with different ethnic groups in the region expressing different cultures and lifestyles through different costumes and jewelry during the era of economic globalization. She founded Pusu Art Jewelry Company in 2013 and has established her own jewelry brand in 2014. Since 2019, she has been a frequent traveller between Europe and China.
She began with stones—turning them into jewelry that speaks of life. Over the past eleven years, she has crafted thousands of pieces, each a quiet witness to human stories, a reflection of her emotions, her views, her exploration of love and hate, life and death. To her, materials—whether raw stones or refined gold—stand as equals. Beauty, in her world, is built on honesty, not hierarchy.
“I have no love for pure art—it’s too hollow. I detest pure commerce—it’s too soulless. But I adore humanity,” she says. “I listen to their stories, record them, and turn them into jewelry. It’s my way of keeping things fair—a trade where art and meaning coexist.”
She often feels gratitude for her connection to the universe. “I’m lucky to use such a beautiful medium to link nature with people’s lives and their inner worlds. Jewelry is my way of embracing the earth under my feet.”
In 2024, she reached a crossroads. Completing the Masieraad: Gold Challenges Contemporary Jewelry project, which took her from Amsterdam to Hasselt, left her with mixed feelings. It made her more frustrated with the world of art—but even more in love with the humanity it mirrors.
“I’ve decided to cut the pretense,” she says, unapologetic. “From now on, I’ll trade art with people—on my terms, no middle ground. Art and humanity deserve nothing less.”
